Not into fantasy football? The National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) brings you the NITLE Prediction Markets, a game anyone can join, creating a free account here: http://markets.nitle.org/ You receive $5000 fantasy currency to begin trading in the markets. The purpose of the game is to get opinions from knowledgeable people in higher education about the direction of technology. You can watch opinion trends by following the “stocks.” I made a prediction on the current question about an e-textbook vendor and how their collection of textbooks might expand in the near future. I don’t know what I’m doing, yet, having never traded stocks in my life, so we’ll see how it goes., but what I expect is that this will be another source of listening to intelligent people in higher ed look to the future.
You can read more about this game in Bryan Alexander’s 2009 EDUCAUSE Review article “A Web Game for Predicting Some Futures: Exploring the Wisdom of Crowds.”
